TV Talk returns with a discussion about Whitney Cummings new shows, "Whitney" and (more specifically) "2 Broke Girls".

Andy

I know you are a sports fan, but the new Fall season in September and October are my March Madness.  It try to watch every new show I reasonably can, and keep up with the ones that have promise up until I just can't bring myself to care anymore.  That happened this year with "Free Agents" half way through its last episode and Terra Nova as soon as I realized they were doing an amnesia episode their third time out of the gate.  But the real story of this years freshman crop is "The Year of Cummings." Whitney Cummings has TWO new shows this season, and both have already gotten full season pick ups.

It's easy to disparage NBC's "Whitney," so I think I will: I never thought a show could make me miss "Outsourced." I'll cop to quitting on the show after the third episode, so it is entirely possible the last two weeks could have turned the show into the "Annoying White Girl" version of "The Wire," but I am guessing they stuck with the "She flips out about their fully functional relationship, wears something slutty, talks with her friends with no inner lives about her non-problems, and then decides to ignore the problem she created out of nothing" formula that worked so well... Until they answer the fundamental question of why anyone would want to be in a relationship with this abrasive, needy shrew, the show just won't work.  What were your impressions of "Whitney?" What made you give up on it?

But the far more interesting of her shows is "2 Broke Girls." It's not a good show by any stretch of the imagination, but there is a kernel of something special in there.  I'm sure I am not the first to say that the big selling point of the show is Kat Dennings and Beth Behr and their chemistry (also: hotness is a factor). The writing on the show is lazy, and the supporting characters are racist charicatures (although I do like the poetry of original SNL cast member Garrett Morris playing a guy who's only attribute is that he seemed cool in the 70s). But the leads are fun and the show gets a couple mild guffaws from me each week.  It is quickly overtaking "Glee" as the worst show I can't stop watching.

How about you? Does Han, Oleg and the gang hit you in your funnybone? Are you waiting for these broke girls to realize they own a quarter million dollar thoroughbred racehorse? And why does the show hate hipsters so damn much? Most importantly, would you say 2BG is one of the best of the new season, or just a mildly entertaining diversion? Or possibly both? It has been a shitty year for new shows.

Chad

I am indeed a sports fan, but I would also consider myself a huge TV fan and I generally try to watch most of the new shows each fall.  Although I stick primarily to sitcoms -- I could give a shit about CSI: Des Moines or Law & Order: Extra Rapey Division.  So, I certainly gave Free Agents a chance, and actually had high hopes for it.  I, like many people I'm sure, thought Katheryn Hahn was fantastic in Step Brothers and was looking forward to her in this.  Well, I made it all of one episode before bailing.  Turns out my DVR recording conflicted with me watching the Milwaukee Brewers make a run to the NLCS.  I planned on giving Terra Nova some run this season as well, but then I found out that the premiere was two hours long and it too conflicted with some other shows in my DVR rotation, so fuck that.

Year of Cummings, indeed.  There's not much to say about Whitney that you and the rest of the internet hasn't already said, so I'll just concur that it's basically terrible and will probably run for five or six seasons.  If I gave you an over/under of four seasons on Whitney, what would you take?  I'm going over but I hope to god I'm wrong.  I watched the pilot and then canceled the series recording because of another conflict with the Brewers playoff run.  Since we're in a safe and caring environment here, I would like to admit that I watched every single episode of Outsourced plus the movie that inspired the show (which I watched twice, I think).  Let's just say I was a fan of Asha.
I'm with you on 2 Broke Girls, there's definitely a good show in there somewhere, I just hope they find it soon.  The first step has to be toning down the blatant racism in the three "ethnic" characters.  I have no issues laughing at an Asian guy who struggles with English or an eastern European womanizer, but through five episodes they're barely even people.  Like you said, just racist caricatures that aren't as funny as the writers think they are.

I really like both of the lead actresses but I can't help but cringe at some of the acting itself.  This is something that will hopefully work itself out, but too many times it feels like they're just tossing out one-liners (Kat Dennings especially).  You mentioned that the writing was lazy -- which may also be a side effect of Whitney Cummings spreading herself too thin -- but do you have any thoughts on the acting (either the two leads or the supporting cast)?  If some of these things don't get fixed I'm afraid I'm going to end up "hate watching" this thing for the duration of it's run.

And now to address some of your questions...I'm really glad you brought up the quarter million dollar racehorse sitting in their back yard.  I'm generally pretty willing to suspend disbelief when it comes to sitcoms because sometimes the writers need to take certain liberties for the sake of a joke or to push a plot line along.  But when something as obviously valuable as a racehorse is staring you in the eye (quite literally on occasion) it kind of makes the whole premise fall apart.  At least in this week's episode they figured out a way to make some money with it, and I have no problem that it came from hipsters with money to blow.  I also can't help but think that the longer they keep that thing in their 10' x 10' back yard its muscles are going to atrophy and the only value it'll have is at a glue factory.  Sell it, hire a jockey and race it, I don't care just do SOMETHING with it because jokes about how you forgot you live with a horse aren't funny.

I'd also like to point out that the little money counter they do at the end of each episode is completely pointless and not at all accurate.  Do you remember the wad of cash they were playing with in the walk-in freezer?  That was a couple hundred dollars easy, and at the end they only added forty bucks to their savings.  However, the wad did bring back some fond memories of Marshall's Wad from the credit card episode of Undeclared, so there's that.

Lastly, I would put this show somewhere in the second tier of new sitcoms for the fall season.  Off the top of my head, I would say New Girl and Up All Night are easily better and I'd probably rank Suburgatory (which I've only watched one episode of) slightly higher than 2 Broke Girls.  Where do you think it ranks among the season's new crop?

So do you think this show has any real staying power?  Will the girls find a way to open their cupcake shop or are they going to insist on drawing that out like How I Met Your Mother with the meeting of the mother?  Is the laugh track the worst thing ever?

Extra Rape equals Extra Drama!

That was actually a rejected slogan for TNT.

The movie "Outsourced"is sitting on my DVR, waiting for me to validate it, but I did catch a few episodes of the show, and it was like a lazy Andrew Dice Clay routine. Aren't Indian's funny? They put curry on everything, have too much respect for other people and their food makes you shit!  I guarantee they share some writers with 2BG...

As to your concern about the money, they said flat out that they made enough at that party to pay off Kat Dennings student loans and have 40 bucks to spare. If you're not going to pay attention, then I can't help you.

I'll take the under on "Whitney." Next year they will try to launch a different comedy in that slot, and without the lead in of "The Office," the ratings will plummet faster than your sisters knickers (sorry. I have been watching a lot of BBC lately...)

I think part of the problem with 2BG is the format.  We grew up on the standard three camera sitcom, but in a post-Seinfeld universe, most TV comedy is shot like film, and the single camera is king.  I think there is some part of me that has lost the ability to enjoy the rhythms of a show like 2BG or even something I kind of enjoy like "The Big Bang Theory." Right now those are the only three camera sitcoms I watch, and probably enjoy them less than most of the other shows in my rotation (now that Entourage is done). That's not to say that single camera is inherently better, but I feel like I might just be used to it now.  How about you? Do you find your eyes roll when a new show is done in the old style? How comfortable are you with reruns of old sitcoms? Do they still hold up?

The claim in the pilot was that they could save enough to open the cupcake shop in two years, so the groundwork is there for a major overhaul if it makes it to three season, and, frankly, I think that would be a better show.  I'd be far more interested in two chesty young go-getters trying to open a cupcake shop than two chesty young go-getters surrounded by rejects from Carlos Mencia sketches making fun of people for their hats (hats are dumb!).

I'd put this show in the "wait and see" pile, and I think that is why I am sticking with it.  Both leads are fun, and can sometimes pull a laugh by sheer force of will, but I think it would take very little to raise the show around them to damn watchable quality.  Check with me again after November Sweeps and we'll see how these ladies fare.

Here's something I want to get your thoughts on: The scene this where Max confronts the ex-boyfriend. We were told that he dumped Caroline because she's poor now, but he had no problem hitting on Max.  It seemed like she was surprised and a bit off her game when he did, too.  I got the feeling she was even flattered.  Were we supposed to find him douchey in that scene? Cause I thought that player had game, and seemed interested in Max cause she was a tough ballbuster, money or not.  They certainly didn't paint him as the villain I expected.  How did you read that scene?

Chad

Dammit! I'm ashamed of myself for missing the part where they actually paid back the student loans. I was probably too fixated on Caroline's huge pearl necklace.

So, from your comment, I assume you expect this to be the final season for The Office. Has that actually been confirmed? Because I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see that limp along for two more seasons, especially if they somehow figure the boss thing out.

As an add on to my previous over/under question, which show runs longer, Happy Endings or Whitney? Keeping in mind Happy Endings already has a season in the books, I'm going with that. We'll have to discuss the lovable gang from Chicago soon.

I agree completely with you on the one vs. three camera issue. There are three things that come to mind for me that generally make the one camera shows better. First, the setting. In most one camera shows, the action is shot in real places. Actual houses, offices, restaurants, whatever. Three camera shows are almost always done on a sound stage, often with a studio audience and laughtrack (you heard me). When you can tell a show is in a real place it's easier for me to immerse myself into the story and actually care. Second, the writing and dialogue tends to have a different tone. Comparing something like Modern Family to The Big Bang Theory, the conversations in Modern Family feel like they could actually happen whereas The Big Bang Theory is just setup, punchline, laughtrack, setup, punchline, laughtrack. And I actually like The Big Bang Theory, I'm just sayin'. The last thing, which I've already mentioned multiple times, is the laughtrack. It's awful, no need to discuss further.

So to answer your questions, I'm not fond of the old style because it just doesn't have that realistic feel to it. And I honestly don't watch many reruns (not even Seinfeld anymore), so I don't have much of an opinion on those, but I assume I wouldn't be a fan.

I also agree that it's a better show if they just get to the cupcake shop already. But I'm afraid the writers are going to make us wait it out, and suffer through another season and a half of Oleg and Han.

To your final points, that player absolutely had game, but there's no way it was genuine. That was strictly a hit-it-and-quit-it scenario and I'm a bit surprised you saw it another way. I agree that Max was a bit thrown off and possibly flattered but I don't believe there was any real interest from Trust Fund Ken. He may not have been explicitly villainous but he, and his get-along gang, were definitely douching it up, in my opinion.

What the hell is with that necklace thing? Gigantic, hideous, and probably hockable at the local pawn shop...

The Office will go on and on as long as NBC is the shittiest network on TV.  Basically, the only shows that NBC has that are bonafide hits are The Office and The Biggest Loser.  That means those are the shows they will try to pair with new stuff they want to launch.  They wanted to get Whitney (and Outsourced before that, and Parks and Rec before that, and 30 Rock before that) as many eyes as they can, so they put it on after one of their highest rated shows in the hopes that people will stick with it. That means that, assuming Whitney is canceled (or even if it is not, but, GOD, I hope it is...), NBC will stick with the Office just so they can have something to launch next seasons Great White Hope of a sitcom in the 9:30 slot. Between that and the ridiculous syndication money, NBC is going to keep The Office going long past its "sell by" date.

This year seems to be all about bringing back the 90s sitcom heyday.  Have a comedian develop a sitcom to star in, where everything is just pulled from their standup act? Tim Allen as a macho throwback in a world gone soft? There is even a show that may not debut at all, but is essentially a remake of "Bosom Buddies," about guys who dress in unconvincing drag to become pharmaceutical reps. Makes me feel all nostalgic for crap... I am sure someone is pitching a show to bring Kristie Alley back to network TV right now...

Last night my roommate wanted to watch an episode of Whitney and I invented a drinking game where you take a shot every time she goes off on a riff about some social or sexual concept that is clearly ripped, virtually word for word, from her stand up act.  We got pretty damn drunk...

Don't know if you caught it, but a new show debuted Thursday on Showtime called "Dave's Old Porn," in which Dave Attell and a guest comedian or two watch 70s and 80s porn and MST3K the hell out of it.  I only bring this up because our favorite punching bag, Whitney Cummings, was his guest on the first episode, and she was actually pretty damn funny.  She couldn't keep up with Attell, and she was clearly trying to work stuff from her act into the commentary, but she was likable and got me to laugh out loud more than once.  Makes me wonder if the problem with her show is just that they tried to adapt her voice for network TV and it all got too watered down to be funny.

Chad

I have not seen, or even heard of, "Dave's Old Porn" but it sounds like a concept I can definitely get behind.  I completely believe that the problem with "Whitney" is that they tried to shoehorn her comedy act into a network show.  Prior to being bombarded with "Whitney" promos the only time I had ever seen her was on Comedy Central Roasts (most notably Bill Shatner, I think) and I just assumed her stand up was pretty filthy, adult humor, which is perfectly fine.  So I questioned why or how they would be able to fit that into a primetime sitcom.  Turns out they couldn't.  I feel like this would have been a much more tolerable show if it were on a network like FX and teamed up with "Louie" and/or "Always Sunny".  That would have given her the opportunity to be a little truer to herself and maybe drop an S-bomb every now and then.  I would also think on a cable network they'd be a bit more forgiving with lower ratings.

Hopefully the powers-that-be in charge of 2 Broke Girls figure where to take the story before CBS is forced to cancel it.  Again, I really like Max and Caroline, their chemistry is solid (although far from perfect) and I think they can get better.  Here's to hoping they figure it all out before the diner shuts its doors for good and the cupcake shop never rises.  (Get it? Bakery humor!)

Welcome to a new feature here at the Juice, where two dudes with too much time on their hands discuss what they liked (or didn't like) about a TV show of their choosing.  For more comedy and other random awesomeness you can follow guest blogger Andy Lauwasser on Twitter @ALauwasser.  This week Chad and Andy will break down Community's latest episode "Remedial Chaos Theory".

Chad

This week's episode of Community, "Remedial Chaos Theory", is the best of Season 3 so far, and easily in my top 5 favorite episodes of the series. It was initially scheduled to be the third episode of the season (hence apartment number 303 for Troy and Abed's new place) but due to the complexity of the concept and the difficulty in editing the different time lines, series creator Dan Harmon decided to switch it with last weeks "Competitive Ecology". Let's take some time to talk about what worked for us and what didn't in this episode, but please, let's avoid touchy topics like "the Negro problem" because it just wouldn't be appropriate.

I definitely enjoyed the premise of the episode and thought it was pulled off in a way only Community can. Did you catch on to Jeff's ploy with the dice rolling? I noticed it almost immediately and was initially surprised that they didn't address it, but then as I started to realize where they were going with the plot, I assumed it would be resolved toward the end.

Which of time lines (aside from the real one where Abed catches the die), would you have been most interested in seeing more of? For me it would be either the one where Pierce gets the pizza and Troy and Britta bond in the bathroom or the darkest timeline where Troy gets the pizza and everything goes to shit. The first one interests me because I'd like to see Troy and Britta get together because a.) it would probably make Jeff jealous since he's always carried a bit of flame for Britta and b.) I just really like Troy and he deserves some play. Admittedly, those two may end up hooking up anyway. We did get a glimpse of the darkest time line in the tag at the end and that one interests me just because Evil Troy and Evil Aaaabed would certainly have some exciting adventures trying to get back to their real selves.

Did you notice how they kept mentioning how creepy and ugly the pizza guy was in the first couple time lines and then Britta falls in love and gets engaged to the dude? I didn't really catch it the first time I watched the episode, but it turned out to be one of my favorite jokes in this episode. The set up was sort of under the radar but it's a good example of the clever writing on this show. I'd definitely let Britta kiss my fingers if you know what I mean.

One thing that definitely bugged me about the episode was Jeff banging his head on the fan. Who hangs a fan so low that a slightly-taller-than-average person would hit their head on it? I understand that it's a TV show and they probably just did it to give Annie an excuse to care for Jeff's injury, but come on. Troy and Abed may want to call their apartment complex's maintenance crew to fix that.

That's all I have for now, what did you think about the episode? I've gotta go refill the toilet olives...

Andy

Can't talk. I'm banging Eartha Kitt in an airplane bathroom..."

OK. I'm back. I wish we were starting this feature out with a more controversial episode, but I thought this was an all-time classic as well. Any of the season's first three episodes would have made for a better discussion about "Community" and people's preferences between their more ambitious theme episodes (Paintball, D&D, Zombies) and the "Ordinary" episodes. This week's made me think about one of my all time favorites, "Mixology Certification," where they found a blend between the two, taking the action out of Greendale and into the real world.

I could have done with a shortened version of the introductory speech every time. By the third roll of the dice, we got the premise well enough that we didn't need that much hand holding. But I am at a bit of a loss for things that didn't work for me. Really, the only false note that I felt was the notion that Shirley was attempting to establish her identity through baked goods. We haven't gotten much about Shirley cooking since Pierce taught her to sell the idea of her brownie/Netflix idea back in season one. She has always been the group mom, attempting to make everything pleasant and god-fearing. Her sudden need to define herself through mini-pies (that taste just like full sized pies) felt a bit out of nowhere.

But that is a small quibble in what was a darn near perfect half hour of comedy, and the most ambitious episode of any TV show that I can think of. If I had to pick one timeline to stick with, it would be Britta's, because we got legitimate progress on the Annie/Jeff sexual tension (which needs to come to a head ASAP, or it's going to get pretty stale), and the addition of the Rat-Tail-Bearded Pizza Guy can only pay positive comedic dividends.

The tag where everyone was miserable ad hated everyone else made me feel like I was watching an episode of Two and a Half Men. As cynical as this show can seem, I think it has an underlying sweetness about choosing the people we love that just doesn't work when Jeff is declaring his hatred for Abed and Pierce has bled out and died...

In the end, what I think is most interesting about what this episode tell us about the group is that, despite all the misery that Pierce caused last season, it might be Jeff, and his "too cool for everything" attitude that is holding them back from being happy. That is the sweetness I was talking about above. Jeff needs to stay distant from anything, and even has to cut Britta off before she can get to the second syllable of "Roxanne." Look how much joy and camaraderie comes from Jeff's absence, and maintains after he comes back! Even last week's episode would have been conflict free if Jeff was gone, as they would have had an even six people to pair off.

So what do you think? Would the study group be better off without Jeff? What does he bring to the other six that they need? And would you say that this is a pessimistic or cynical show overall, or do you get a more optimistic tone? What does this show have to say about the families we choose to join?

Chad

I agree with you about the Shirley story. She's easily the least interesting character, in my opinion, and I didn't really understand the whole Identity Through Baking thing. It seemed more like the other characters were pushing that idea on us more than Shirley herself.

You bring up some good points about Britta's time line but I'm not sure I could handle her being infatuated with Rat Tail Beard for an extended period. Although they'd probably be very happy together smoking joints the bathroom. And I have confidence that the Jeff and Annie sexual tension will be dealt with at some point this season. The show's writers have proven that they're smart enough to not make a mistake like drawing out a plot point just because they don't want to commit to one path or the other. I'm pretty indifferent to which way they go with it, but if I had to pick one I'd say they don't ultimately become a couple because of the whole "you remind me of my dad" thing.

The mini-revelation that Jeff is really the bad seed in the group is an interesting one, but also a realistic one. In the real world, there are really only three members of the study group who would be friends outside of school: Annie, Abed and Troy (maybe Britta). They're the ones who would traditionally be considered "college age". I'm definitely hoping that Annie moves in with Troy and Abed because those three need to have that real college experience. I would love to see some B-stories where they go to a house party and hang out in a dingy basement playing flip cup or blow off cramming for an exam and have a Halo tournament instead. The only drawback for this is that they live in an apartment and not the dorms, which I think were severely underused in the previous seasons when Abed and Troy were dorm mates.

Regarding your question about whether the group would be better off without Jeff, I don't think so. Even though he's kind of a dick and tends to keep people at arms length, I still think he cares about everyone in the group and I think they all genuinely like him. We all have friends who can get on our nerves but we still keep them around because the good generally outweighs the bad. I do wonder if this episode is laying the ground work for a more in depth exploration of how the group would be better off without each member. Like you mentioned, last season basically pointed out all the ways in which Pierce is a horrible person, are we headed for a similar arc this season with Jeff?

I don't really feel that the show is pessimistic or cynical, I think the tone is somewhat influenced by its setting. Community colleges are usually pretty shitty and sort of depressing. The show reflects that and finds the humor in it as well as in the myriad topics and genres it explores and parodies.

Looking forward, what do you think/hope this episode lays the ground work for in the rest of the season? Will we see more examples of how Jeff hurts the group? Will Evil Troy and Evil Abed pop up again and attempt to conquer the world? (Dear lord I hope so!) What do you think this season holds for characters who were absent in this episode, like Professor Omar, Chang and John Goodman's Vice Dean Robert Laybourne? Would you frequent a place like Single Malt Platinum Boobs & Billiards Club?

Andy

I'm not saying I want the rest of the season to be the Britta and Rat Tail Beard Dude Show" (a spin-off I would seriously consider watching), but that version at least had narrative progression. At the end of the "Jeff" storyline, everything is pretty much exactly where it was before, with the exception of the guys having asked Annie to move in.

I don't feel passionately one way or the other about Jeff and Annie, but I would rather the writers either did something about it or dropped it. They were the ones that made it an issue with the first season finale, and I think not addressing it in the second season in any serious way was that season's biggest misstep.

I don't think there is that much to be gained from seeing the gang playing drinking games or pulling all nighters. They already had Troy and Abed as the "Campus CutUps" in the season one finale (I for one, would approve of the return of their robot, the Boobatron 5000). We've seen what the characters do when they are drinking (in the episode they went to the bar). What can we really learn about these relationships that we don't already know by having them play beer pong?

I am actually liking that it looks like we will spend more time off campus this season, even going to the AC repair branch of Greendale. A larger world is just a more fun playset for Dan Harmon, the writers and the actors to enjoy. I think it is interesting to note that already this season we had Annie's asian doppelganger and the idea of crossing between universes in the Model UN episode, and now the alternate realities this week. Are they setting the ground for an evil twin battle? Lord I hope so...

I'm not sure how sold I am on Professor Omar (I'm glad we are not pretending he is anyone but Omar). He just isn't distinctly wierd enough to fit in with our ensemble. His rant about how complicated Legos are now was a step in the right direction. Goodman has only gotten one scene this season, so I am still on the fence about him. As for Security Detective Chang, I always like him better when they reign him in a bit, and the security guard storylines thus far have made him less recognizably human.

Any homages or spoofs you are anxious to see them take on? The show keeps getting more and more ambitious, so I'd like to see a silent film eventually. Maybe a Silence of the Lambs spoof for Britta now that she is studying psychology.

Chad

Sure, there's probably not much to be gained in further developing the characters or their relationships by throwing them into a keg party. But that doesn't mean it wouldn't be a fun episode to watch. You mentioned that it seems like we're going to get more time off campus (or at least outside the library/class rooms) and this would be a perfect opportunity to do that. It's possible that I'm forgetting something, but I don't recall the show referencing or parodying college-themed movies like Animal House or Old School. Wouldn't this be a perfect opportunity for that? Or would it be too easy and obvious...maybe.

Semi-random side note: I really hope we get more time with John Goodman and the AC repair school. For some reason I think there's a gold mine in having an HVAC training program bank roll an entire community college.

I'm fully on board with the evil twin battle. I don't really have much more to add here but I think Abed's quote in the tag pretty much spelled this scenario out, and I doubt they would have given us that if they weren't going to follow up.

Professor Omar may not be weird enough to fit the group, but I think he's perfectly capable of providing a sort of foil for the rest of the characters. Someone who can observe their brand of crazy and try to point out just how fucked up they all are. The little rant about the Legos was priceless. The way they've changed over the last 25 years or whatever is something that most people wouldn't think twice about, but I can definitely see how that could mess with a guy used to a big bucket of colored bricks.

I like your idea about the Silence of the Lambs spoof with Britta as Clarice, but the only reference or spoof I'm really hoping for is with Professor Omar. They pretty much have to do another paint ball episode with him rolling up in a black trench coat and sawed off shotgun paint ball gun, right? I would also love a reference to the "Bro Rape" video Donald Glover did with Derrick Comedy but I'm not sure that would be appropriate for prime time network television.

Well, I think I'm about tapped out for this episode. Any final thoughts?

Andy

And now, my final thought: When parents, fight, it is the children that always lose. LaDante and Jerbenjamin proved that here tonight. So hug your children. Take care of yourself and each other...

If you liked Derrick Comedy, definitely check out their movie, "Mystery Team." It takes a simple premise of what happens to a group of kid detectives when they're teenagers and mines it for a lot of laughs. Aubrey Plaza is in it, too, if you enjoy that kind of boobs.

As we bid adieu to our conversation on last week's "Community," I'd just like to repeat my astonishment at the heights that Dan Harmon and his merry band can climb to. They don't always hit a home run, but they are always swinging for the fences, and there is not a more ambitious show on television, and it might be the most ambitious comedy in TV history. There are worse things to have etched into your tombstone...

Till next week!

Chad

Aubrey Plaza is my favorite kind of boobs...

2010       Comp%   TD  Int. Rating
Player A  58.3         14    15  77.1
Player B  61.8         26    20  82.4
Player C  58.8         20     9   87.5

There are two things these three players having in common: they were available for a trade today and they are average at best NFL quarterbacks.Yet somehow Player B (Palmer) was traded for a first rounder this year and a second rounder next year.  While Player A (McNabb) and Player C (Orton) were both replaced in the last couple of weeks for general sucky-ness.

I'm not advocating the Raiders should have traded for McNabb.  He's been spinning bounce passes for years now but hell it would have probably only cost a conditional 7th rounder to get him.  The Broncos look like they are going into tank mode and probably would have given Orton up for a mid round pick.  I would imagine Orton could do about as well as Campbell, maybe even a little better.

That's why it's truly mind-blowing that Palmer was dealt for even one high draft pick not to mention two.  The dude hasn't been good since 2006, turns 32 this year and has had an elbow injury and his knee caved in.  Yeah great trade!

The Raiders are my second favorite team so I hope I'm completely wrong and Palmer has a Kurt Warner like resurgence in the twilight of his career.  But I doubt it.

After a 4 for 5 showing last week here are my favorite lines of the week.

Raiders -7 v. Browns
Oakland's coming out fired up for this one and that stadium is going to be crazy.  Commitment to excellence! RIP Al

Bengals -7 v. Colts
Bengals aren't half bad. The colts are bad.

Lions -4.5 v. 49ers
San Francisco's surprised me this year but I think the Lions have too much talent on offense to lose this game.

Saints -4.5 at Buccaneers
Blount's out and Williams has been a ghost this season.  Saints win by a touchdown.

Jets -7 v. Dolphins
The Jets absolutely need a win and Matt Moore is starting at QB for Miami.  Enough said

In no particular order...

Oakland +8 at Houston

Oakland can ride one of the best rushing attacks in the NFL to keep this game close, not to mention Houston will be without Andre Johnson. Look for Houston to win this game, but not by more than a touchdown.

Tampa Bay +3 at San Francisco

Even though Tampa has to travel to the west coast on a short week, the Bucs have the ability to over-come this challenge. Raheem Morris knows how to get his guys to play and San Francisco has been overachieving so far this year.

New York Jets +8.5 at New England

This is a rivalry game and the Jets play the style of game that gives the Patriots some trouble. Look for Rex's boys to get back to 'ground and pound' and keep this one close. New England wins another tightly contested game between these two teams.

San Diego -4 at Denver

San Diego is much more talented and at least a touchdown better than Denver even on the road. We also must not forget that we have completed the first quarter of the season so San Diego's 'slow-start' is over. I like San Diego in a route.

Green Bay -6.5 at Atlanta

The Packers are clicking on all cylinders on offense. Their passing defense is suspect at best so Atlanta will put up a fight, but Green Bay's offense scores almost every time they touch the ball. Atlanta stays in this one for about 3 quarters, but the Packers are just to much.

Cincinnati +2 at Jacksonville
This battle of rookie QB's might not be pretty but the Bengals should win this game.  Dalton and Green have a nice thing going. It also helps that Benson's appeal is still pending and Simpson is out of jail and not suspended from his moronic marijuana incident.

Green Bay -6.5 at Atlanta
Atlanta's going to come out fired up on Sunday night but I think Rodgers and this ridiculous offense is going to be too much for the Falcons.  I do like Jones and White to have big games against a secondary still adjusting to life after Nick Collins.

San Francisco -3 vs Tampa Bay
It's never fun to have money riding on Alex Smith but the Buccaneers traveling across country on a short week is a recipe for a 49er win.

Tennessee +3 at Pittsburg
Pittsburg's offensive line is a mess, Roethlisberger is banged up and Harrison is out.  Surprisingly Hasselbeck looks great in a new offense at age 36.  Weird

San Diego -4 at Denver
Rivers has looked bad at times this year but should have a nice game against a weak Broncos secondary.
